Practicum Experience
Power Point Presentation
Mrs. Bronder's 2nd grade class at Settlement Canyon Elementary

Tin Foil Mask
I started out by researching all the different types of mask making that I could find online. There were so many. I chose to make mine using tin foil and masking tape. I liked that you got to make the shape of your own face with the tin foil and then use the masking tape to help keep its shape especially one the checks, nose, and chin area. I started off by using 3 sheets of tin foil and pressed them on my face to get the initial shape. Once I was happy with the shape, I put the tin foil on and started putting masking tape on top. This helped keep the shape while putting the tape on. Once it was covered in tape, I cut out the eye holes and folded over the edges to give it a clean look. You can use so many different mediums to decorate the mask but I used acrylic paint for the all over color and then glued on glitter for the accents. Once I was finished I punched holes in both sides so I could tie a string on so you could wear the mask. This was fun because it is your face and you can decorate it any way you want to make it yours.

Milk Jug Mask
This was a really fun project. I did a little research so I could get some ideas of what African masks looked like and what they were designed like. Once I had a few ideas I cut out the shape of mask I wanted out of an empty milk jug. I used a sharp knife to cut if out because I felt that I got smoother edges compared to scissors. Once it was cut out, I used masking tape to cover the entire surface, this gave it a little texture. Once it was covered in tape, I painted mine using tempera paints. I knew I wanted mine to be simple and not a ton of colors, so I painted the entire face one color and then added other colors when creating the design. This was fun and fairly easy and would be a great project for older elementary kids.  There are so many different shapes of masks you can make and then they can paint whatever African design they like.

Zentangled Scratchboard
This project is a mix of a zentangle and a scratchboard. I had never made a scratchboard before so this was really fun. I first researched what a zentangle design was and then had to incorporate my own design onto a scratchboard. I made the scratchboard using a piece of watercolor paper and coloring it with all different colors using oil pastels. Then I mixed black tempera paint and liquid dish soap together and painted 2 coats onto the paper. Once that was dry, I used different tools such as a needle, nail, fork, and pen cap to sketch my design onto the paper. Once I had my design sketched out I used larger tools to scratch away larger areas to have the color show through. This was a really fun project even though it did get a little messy. But what art isn't messy!

Batik
Creating this was a little more difficult for me since I am not good at drawing. This was my second attempt at this project. My first attempt was branches of different shapes and sizes but as I was drawing them out they all kind of looked the same. Since the project had to be something from nature, I decided to do seashells since I knew I could make them look different. I started out by drawing out different types of seashells and then traced them on to muslin using elmers glue. After the glue was dry, I painted in the space with tempera paint and a dry brush. Once the paint was dry, I soaked it in warm water and peeled off all the glue. That is how I ended up with my piece.

100 Color Challenge
For this project, I had my daughter help me mix and create different colors using watercolors and tempera paints. On the top half of the page, I used watercolors to make 50 different colors. I mixed and blended all sorts of combinations of colors to be able to get 50 different shades. One the bottom half of the page, I used tempera paints. I only used red, blue, yellow, black, and white. Only being able to use a few colors really made the project a little difficult. After a while all the colors started to look the same. Once I finished all the colors, I walked away from the project and when I returned I could tell a difference in each of them. I think I just needed to let my eyes take a break.

Alien Name
This was another fun project for me. I cut my name out a few different times to see which one I liked best. After experimenting with the different shapes that I got from cutting my name out, I had fun drawing a planet for my alien to live on. I wanted it to be simple and unique. I just used markers to color my aliens planet. This is also another project that my daughter saw and had to make one of her own. Perfect project for young elementary kids.

Printmaking
For my first method I used the plastic bag method and found it was pretty easy once I figured out how much paint to use. The first couple tries I used too much and it went every where and just looked liked colors smeared together. Then I tried less paint and it was not enough and I couldn't see the image that well. I then tried sponging on the paint using plastic bags and that was easy and fun. I think that would be a fun way to use in the classroom since it was so easy. My second method I used the stamp method. My first picture I wrapped string around a piece of wood and just that design on to the paper. I liked it because I could make it look really clean and not look messy to me.Then I combined a few different stamp methods together such as plastic forks, potato, and paper towel roll. This was fun to use different designs and techniques to get a your final picture and I thought this would be easy to use in the classroom too. If I used the potato stamp in class I would have a few potatoes already carved for the students to use so they wouldn't have to carve a design. All the supplies I used were basic things I had around the house so it would be easy and cheap to do as a project in the classroom.

Cardboard Construction
This project was inspired by a variety of different cardboard designs that I saw online. I really liked the ones that were non objective and different. I liked bending the cardboard and creating circles and stacking them on top of each other. After I finished my creation, I used a silver spray paint so that it would look like this piece belonged in outer space. This is the type of art that I like to create. I get to use my imagination and create anything I want and it doesn't have to resemble anything.

Light Painting
Once I played around with the camera and different light sources this project was really fun. At first, I would say it was frustrating but it just took some time to figure it out. I had my daughter and husband help me and my daughter had so much fun. For this picture, I used glow sticks to give the different streaks of color and I liked the light posts on the street that are in the background. I feel like this is my life, time just gets away from me so fast and I hate how fast time flies by.

Watercolored Emotions
I was inspired by food for this art project. When I created this piece I was about 13 weeks pregnant and not a lot of food sounded good to me. I used different techniques to create different textures. For the top left one I just blended watercolors to get the soft pink color to represent fruit juice that I was drinking. The top middle one I used a white crayon to color on texture before painting over it with watercolors. I also blended different colors to get different shades of orange. The top right one I placed a plastic bag over the wet watercolor to give it texture and different shades of brown. The bottom left one I sprinkled salt over the wet watercolors to create the look of a egg. The bottom middle one I used a couple different techniques. I sprayed rubbing alcohol over the wet watercolors as well as dabbed it with a paper towel to create different shades. The bottom right one I used a combinations of colors to create the dark red and then painted it on with a dry brush.
Georgia O'keeffe
This art project was a little harder for me because I am not very good at drawing. I drew out several different designs that I came up with after being inspired by all the different Georgia O'keeffe paintings that I viewed. After being happy with my drawing I used water colors to paint my picture and create different shades and colors. I was very pleased with my final project and really liked my color choices.

Foil Square
This was a fun piece of art for me. I was able to create anything I wanted. I started by using a hot glue gun and gluing down yarn on to a piece of cardboard and making a non-objective design. Then, I placed a piece of tin foil over the cardboard and took a Q-tip to outline the lines. I then colored the tin foil with different colors of sharpie markers to give it different pops of color.

Notan
This notan was created after being inspired by other notans that I looked at online. Before this assignment I did not know what a notan was. I created this piece by using black construction paper and cutting out different designs on each side of the black square. I only used scissors to cut my designs out. After they were all cut out, I glued them on to a larger piece of white paper to create the black and white design.

Mandala
I started by just drawing things on a paper and experimenting with different ideas so that I could get my small amount of creativity going in my head. I knew I wanted to do a design that represented my family from the beginning and how far we have come to where we are now. I started with a circle in the middle that represents me. The next 3 circles made of individual dots represent my husband and his 2 kids. The yellow in the middle represents us together. The individual lines that make up the squares represents each of us making things work so we didn’t feel like we were trapped in a box. Then we added to our family so the gold lines connecting the square to the outer circle represent each family member now that our family has grown and there is a circle of dots in the outer circle to represent each member as well to show that we are united and have joined together as a whole. I chose to do individual dots for the circles and square to show how we have joined together to become one. I used acrylic paints for the dots since I liked the bold look they gave. I also chose to do different colors for each person to show individuality of each of us but the circle represents us as a whole and how far we have grown together. I decided to use water color around the edges to represent water since it represents happiness to me.
